Hypertension and Its Treatment With Herbs

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is the force that is put against the arterial walls by the blood as it's pumped throughout the body. This pressure causes the arterial walls to thicken and become narrow, adding more strain on the heart. According to The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies, at least 50 million people in the United States suffer from hypertension.

HBP is common across the world, occurring most often in Northern China and Japan. Many people don't show signs of hypertension until it becomes severe, in which common symptoms include visual disturbances, headaches, and shortness of breaths. Prolonged hypertension can have lasting damage to the kidneys, heart, and eyes.

The diet of a person suffering from high blood pressure should be low in refined sugar. They should also lower their consumption of fat, caffeine, and alcohol. Fruits, nuts, and vegetables should be regularly eaten since a vegetarian diet is associated with lower blood pressure. A person's salt intake should range from low to moderate, and plenty of garlic and onions should be eaten.

In a newsletter from the American Herbal Guild, Tom Wolfe stated, "The treatment goal of hypertension is to prevent the long-term sequalae of the disease. The treatment of all degrees of hypertension reduces the morbidity and morality associated with strokes, renal insufficiency, and congestive heart failure.

Unless there is an overt need for pharmacologic therapy, most patients should be given the opportunity to achieve a spontaneous reduction of their blood pressure over a closely followed interval of 4-6 months... "
There are many herbs that can aid the body in lowering its blood pressure and contribute to healthy living. Infused hawthorn berries are known as a good heart tonic, while cramp bark is used to dilate the arteries.

Garlic is commonly known as one of the most healing herbs, and is recommended that people suffering from high blood pressure eat plenty raw garlic regularly.

Patients at the Mountain River Naturopathic Clinic are given a tincture to help lower their blood pressure. Herbs used in this tincture were chosen by the doctors because they are their strongest, safest herbs they have available.

These herbs include Lily of the Valley, Motherwort, the Night Blooming Cactus, Dandelion leaf, Lime Blossom, and Hawthorne.

Patients with hypertension should be given the opportunity to lower their blood pressure before being put on pharmaceuticals. Herbs have diverse actions within the human body, and have many beneficial nutrients essential to healthy living. With more natural and holistic approaches to healing the body, there will be less long-term damage to the human body.
